The Director of Design leads Academia’s Design and Research teams, and is the leading advocate for User Experience and Design in our Product strategy and execution. You bring valuable user insights and design thinking to company strategic conversations, while leading your team of designers and researchers to develop great customer experiences.

This is a management role, overseeing a team of 3 designers and the Head of User Research.

Responsibilities:

* Set an outstanding design vision for Academia while providing designers and user researchers a clear direction on how to get there. Play a key role in developing an innovative product strategy in collaboration with senior leadership and PMs.
* Manage key stakeholders that may have strong or differing views. 
* Be a strong advocate for the user and ensure that users are kept at the center of the product development process. Balance user needs with business goals while handling difficult trade-offs. 
* Translate big product and design ideas into tangible steps on how to bring these ideas to life. 
* Define a cross-channel visual design style, and socialize it across the company. 
* Evolve the design system and introduce design system best practices.
* Mentor designers in the areas of design strategy, UX, and visual design.

Requirements

Ideal candidate:

* Has 10+ years previous experience in Product Design, with a strong Visual Design background. 
* Has experience building B2C internet products within a leading consumer software company.
* Has managerial experience leading teams of designers and researchers.

About the role
Academia is expanding and this presents an excellent opportunity for you to lead the growth, marketing, and design of our products as a Growth Product Designer. Playing a key role in the Design Team, you’ll work on Academia’s Growth and Marketing team in a test-driven environment. You’ll partner with Product Management, User Research, and Engineering to create innovative solutions that meet user needs and drive business results.

This is a great chance to significantly influence product growth, marketing, and design through your creative insights and drive impact in a positive way. Your designs will impact millions of users around the world, helping to make research more accessible to all.

What you’ll do
* Design for user and business impact. You’ll focus on solving problems for users while considering the impact your designs will have on business growth. 
* Work in a range of areas. You’ll work on projects with a focus on customer acquisition, product marketing, user activation & engagement, and product growth. 
* High-level and detailed design work. On some days you will be whiteboarding high-level conceptual solutions to design problems while on others you will be rapidly sketching ideas and launching experiments. 
* Analyze and iterate: You’ll use quantitative and qualitative analysis to measure the impact of your designs or create new designs. 
* Prototype and usability test. Prototype designs with the software of your choice and then usability test them with users.

Desired experience
* 3-5+ years experience as an end-to-end Product Designer (hybrid UX and UI) in a similar role.
* Experience in a test-driven environment (MVP validation or A/B testing).
* Experience in going from board conceptual design ideas to detailed visual and interactive designs. 
* Experience in making strategic design decisions based on user needs, quantitative and qualitative data, engineering capabilities, and product requirements.

About the role
In this role you will conduct foundational, generative, and evaluative research to understand the needs and product experiences of our diverse user base. You will work cross-functionally with PMs, leadership, engineering, and data science to identify research needs, execute on research using mixed methods, deepen user empathy across the company, and inspire the Product team with actionable recommendations. We are a small team so you’ll have the capacity for impact across the full product cycle, while also taking part in initiatives that explore new markets and enterprise offerings.
 
Minimum Qualifications
* B.A. in a social or behavioral science, HCI, UX Design, or other field with a research component
* 3+ years of end-to-end user research experience in an industry setting
* Formal training or experience with study design, data collection, analysis, and synthesis in multiple methods
* Demonstrated expertise with  qualitative methods
* Ability to translate findings into compelling, actionable insights and specific product recommendations and feed them into the product roadmap
* Ability to balance competing requests across multiple product teams and leadership

Typical Responsibilities
* Work with PMs, designers, and leadership to understand current priorities and business goals and develop research projects to both inform and guide the product teams.
* Handle the pipeline of inbound research requests from various teams across the organization. Prioritize new and ongoing projects, and quickly react to real-time changes.
* Conduct qualitative research, including interviews, ethnographies, remote and in-person usability testing, survey research, secondary research, and more.
* Create foundational user artifacts such as user narratives, personas, journeys, jobs to be done, etc. that will inform all teams.

Our ideal candidate is an engineer who can augment their mobile experience and expertise with a generalist outlook. Good knowledge of Android development, deployment, and best-practices. 

We are building entirely new mobile apps for Academia. Our iOS app just launched and we are about to start working on Android with Kotlin. We are looking for a product manager who:
·       deeply understands user needs to develop new product experiences to solve their problems;
·       has a track record of identifying, developing, and launching products that achieve meaningful business results;
·       can demonstrate creativity in product problem solving and MVP design;
·       has experience with A/B testing, product metrics, and quantitative analysis;

Academia is hiring a Senior Site Reliability Engineer to join our team. 

At Academia, we believe SRE is a mindset and a set of engineering approaches to running better production systems - we build our own creative engineering solutions to reliability problems. SREs are responsible for the big picture of how our systems are designed for operability, how they relate to each other, and we use a breadth of tools and approaches to solve a broad spectrum of problems. 

Requirements:

•  3+ years of experience minimum as an SRE on large scale high profile apps.
•  8+ years of overall software engineering experience.
•  Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science is preferred or equivalent work experience. 
•  Strong technical communications skills and solid knowledge of web architecture and systems.
•  Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
•  Fluent coding skills
• Deep knowledge of Linux systems experience 
• Current and deep knowledge of Cloud Infrastructure technologies
• Current and deep experience with Site Reliability Engineering principles
• Lots of war stories about “saving the day”.
• Demonstrated ability to "fix a plane while it's in flight". 
• We use Terraform and Ansible for provisioning, Sensu and Librato for monitoring, PagerDuty, AWS, EC2. You should have experience with these or similar tools. 
•  Experience maintaining and automating high availability systems (ideally for millions of users)
•  Experience wearing a pager and resolving “firefights”. 
•  Leadership experience is preferred. Since this role has the potential to grow into managing multiple infrastructure teams; we'd like to find an engineer who might find this interesting, but it's not a requirement if you don't.
